Who We Are & What We Do

The Middlesex District Attorney’s Office is dedicated to identifying potential wrongful convictions and facilitating access to post-conviction DNA testing for viable innocence claims. To further this goal, District Attorney Marian Ryan established Middlesex County’s Conviction Integrity Unit (CIU) in 2013 to review post-conviction claims of actual innocence, minimize the impact of cognitive biases on prosecutions, and respond to such claims in a fair, efficient, and comprehensive manner.

How the Conviction Integrity Unit Serves Middlesex County

As part of the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, the CIU’s work covers 54 diverse cities and towns. The District Attorney’s office’s mission is to protect and serve all people who work, live, and raise their families in Middlesex County. This includes ensuring those who were convicted of crimes were prosecuted in a fair and just manner.

What Kind of Cases are Eligible for Review

For a case to be eligible for review, the conviction at issue must have occurred in Middlesex County, the defendant must face a restraint of liberty, and the application must present a post-conviction claim of factual innocence or allege a potential miscarriage of justice. Once these criteria are met, the CIU will initiate the review process.

The Conviction Integrity Unit Application for Review is Now Online.

Starting in October 2022, persons seeking review of their cases will be able to submit an application for review online in addition to via mail. This online process provides greater access to those seeking review of their claims by both minimizing the need to request an application and avoiding the unnecessary expense of purchasing postage.
